Students at Warren Easton Charter High School will be able to see doctors at the school’s health clinic during school hours from Monday through Friday next year, thanks to an extended schedule. And staff may soon be welcome there as well.

The president of the school’s governing board, David Garland, made the announcement at Wednesday’s monthly meeting.

The clinic is run by Access Health Louisiana, a nonprofit network of clinics throughout Southeast Louisiana. Previously, it was run by Tulane University’s Department of Pediatrics.

Garland said the school hopes the clinic will be able to serve staff by next October, and that a partnering clinic on the corner of Broad and Orleans would be able to help students after-hours.

“This is starting to be what was envisioned all those years ago — us not just taking care of students, but also staff,” Garland said. “It’s a major step forward.”

“That initial investment in the clinic allowed us to achieve this success level,” Garland added, crediting Tulane University for its role in helping start the service.

In other news, a report by the Louisiana Department of Education shows that 73 percent of Warren Easton’s Class of 2012 went on to college the fall after graduating. That compares to a statewide average of 56 percent and an Orleans Parish average of 71 percent.

“Those are excellent, excellent numbers,” Garland said.

The board also voted to adopt Warren Easton’s projected 2014-15 budget of about $9.25 million.
