Update, Jan 30: Two passages in the story have been corrected, as noted below. Five months into their first year running Harriet Tubman, the Crescent City Schools board of directors  is preparing to run two more. Crescent City plans to take over Akili Academy in Gentilly in July, and possibly start running a third school next year.

Teachers fight layoffs as board targets deficits

Just outside the gates of the navy base that was formerly a pillar of the Algiers neighborhood, teachers wonder what their future might be in a rapidly changing school system. The Algiers Charter School Association, which now runs eight schools in the community, is looking to cut 30 positions to keep a balanced budget and could end participation in the state retirement system, starting next fall.

Fund-raiser joins staff; enrollment growing

A few months into their first year running a new school, board members of Harriet Tubman Charter continue searching for money to finance it. Crescent City Schools hired a staff member focused solely on fund-raising, and she wants board members to bring two names of potential donors each month.
