Have you ever wondered how Louisiana’s public records laws work? On Thursday, December 8 journalists from The Lens will explain how you can use public records to hold your government agencies accountable and how to get those records.
This time, we will focus on environmental records. This includes public records relating to environmental impacts, land use and coastal use authorization. Lens editor Marta Jewson and staffer Joshua Rosenberg will walk you through some of their environmental coverage, showing you how they used public records requests to state and local governments, as well as publicly available databases.
Here’s what you’ll learn:
- How to use Louisiana’s public records law to view and obtain documents.
- How to utilize the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality’s electronic database known as EDMS.
- How to navigate the state’s coastal use permit database.

Location: Tulane River and Coastal Center – ByWater Institute, 1370 Port of New Orleans Pl, New Orleans, LA 70130. Once you cross over the railroad tracks, take a left and the ByWater Institute will be on your right.
Parking: Free in Parking Lot J which will be on the right just before you cross the railroad tracks.
