Three Algiers Charter School Association schools will not rejoin Orleans Parish School Board oversight next year after a unanimous board vote Thursday night to remain with the Recovery School District.
Dwight D. Eisenhower Academy of Global Studies, Martin Behrman Charter School Academy of Creative Arts and Sciences and L.B. Landry-O.P. Walker College and Career Preparatory High School qualified to rejoin the locally represented OPSB because of their improved scores on standardized tests. The board held a public input session on the potential move Tuesday night.
The motion to remain with the RSD came from board member D’Juan Hernandez, who voted to return to OPSB last year.
OPSB board members Leslie Ellison and Nolan Marshall Jr. and Deputy Superintendent of Charter Schools Kathleen Padian attended the meeting, urging the charter group to work with them in the future.
“We want to work very closely with you to make sure you can do everything you can do for our kids,” Marshall said to the charter board. “We want to be your partner. We need somebody to have that faith so we can show you what we can do.”
Ellison said, “Moving forward, we need to talk strategies. Boards cannot keep going to the public and saying no. It has to happen,” Ellison said.
All Algiers board members attended the meeting except Stephanie Bridges.
