The Broadmoor Charter School Board, which oversees Andrew H. Wilson Charter School, agreed Tuesday night to upgrade the school’s energy-efficiency system.

The board voted to approve a contract with Green Coast Enterprises, whose president, Will Bradshaw, serves on the board and offered pro-bono energy-efficiency services to the school. Bradshaw said the school’s building-automation system hasn’t been properly updated over the past several years and doesn’t regulate heating and cooling during non-school hours as it should. The board voted to allow up to $5,000 to be spent updating the system, which Bradshaw says should show energy bill savings in the “thousands of dollars range” immediately.

The funds would be used to pay Siemens, the company who installed the automation system, to update the system and possibly in part to pay the Recovery School District for any potential additional building repairs. No money will go to Green Coast Enterprises.

Principal Logan Crowe told the board that  24 percent of fourth graders and 22 percent of eighth graders are reading at or above grade level. To help improve reading scores for other students, the school has increased reading intervention times and hopes to reach almost three times the number of students getting intervention help last year.

Board members also voted to remove member Stephen Tremaine from the board. Board chair David Winkler-Schmit said Tremaine has been “unable to make the commitment” of attending board meetings regularly. The board decided to honor his service to the school and the Broadmoor neighborhood with a photograph of students in front of the school and a letter thanking him for his service.

All board members except Tremaine were present. The next board meeting will be Oct. 22 at 6:30 in the school’s library.
