Formal review of the school’s 2011 audit topped the agenda as the board of Akili Academy gathered Feb. 27 for its monthly meeting.

The audit showed that Akili passed muster in all facets of its financial bookkeeping.

The board’s committee on institutional advancement reported that it met earlier in the month to review new fundraising initiatives. The committee is crafting a press release calling for support from prospective donors and is reviewing dates for a donor drive while awaiting a response to several grant applications submitted to area foundations.

Recruitment of teachers, curriculum directors, and additional staff for next year is already under way, with several candidates in the review process, the board was advised. Akili will be checking candidates’ references in coming weeks, while assessing staffing needs for next fall.

In other recruiting news, staff and board members will be at the 2012 Schools Expo hosted by the Urban League of Greater New Orleans on March 3. The event will be in the Mercedes Benz Superdome from 10 A.M. to 2 p.m. and is considered a great opportunity for interested students and also for schools seeking to recruit them.

Akili’s governance and strategic planning committees will meet ahead of next month’s meeting of the full board, which begins at 6:30 p.m. on March 26, in the administration annex.
