All eleven New Orleans charter schools going before the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education next week in its annual review process likely will keep their charters.

The Louisiana Department of Education is recommending the renewal of six Recovery School District charters, one BESE charter, and the extension of four others. When a charter has run the length of its contract, the state must renew its charter. Charters in their initial five-year term must receive the one-year extension to complete it. Schools must earn a D for extension.

In previous years, schools have seen their charters not renewed, which effectively closes them. There are no such recommendations this year.

Notably, BESE charter Lycée Français de la Nouvelle-Orléans, received a seven-year renewal recommendation. That’s likely important to the young school seeking financing to rebuild its recently purchase Priestley campus. Lycée is a type 2 charter overseen directly by the state board.

The full list of recommendations can be found on BESE’s agenda. BESE committees meet Jan. 12 and the full board meets Jan. 13.

The state already extended the terms of seven charter high schools last month, but elementary school performance scores weren’t released until December.
