Fannie C. Williams Charter School expects to enroll at least 575 in the coming school year, according to school chief Kelly Batiste.
That number includes 84 new students expected at the K-8 school in eastern New Orleans, and is based on application data the school received through OneApp, a one-stop process that enables students to apply to several charter schools with one application.
Last year’s enrollment rose steadily throughout the school year, bucking a trend of late transfers and no-shows that some other schools saw during the process’s first year.
This school year saw a rise in enrollment that amounted to an additional $360,000 in per-pupil money from the state, according to accountant Shawn Bruno.
At its May 21 meeting, the board discussed how to best handle allowing outside groups to use the school facility.
Recently, a production company used the school’s parking lot while filming nearby. Batiste reported that the rental went well and the campus saw no damage.
Batiste said other groups, including local children’s sports leagues, have asked to use the school as well, particularly the gym. Batiste said the school might use a form used by other charter schools to charge a nominal fee to cover the cost of Fannie C. Williams personnel required to be present on campus during a rental.
The school’s accountant, Shawn Bruno, said that Fannie C. Williams has recently entered into a $250,000 line of credit with First NBC Bank. Many schools utilize credit lines to build credit and provide financial security in the case of an emergency.
The board voted to hold a budget hearing for the 2013-14 budget on June 25 at 4 p.m. The public can attend this meeting to question school expenses at this time.
Board members Al Edwards, Brenda Flint-Minor, Candice Forest, Donnyette Love, and Emily Roubion attended the meeting that lasted about an hour. No members of the public were present except a reporter from the Lens.
