This house (lot) is the first house (lot) in the Lakeview neighborhood above 1-610 that we have ever done a Squandered Heritage post on. The house has already been demolished and the city did a great job at completely tearing up the sidewalk this city certainly values its neighborhoods and its citizens so much. This neighborhood is not in the Housing Conservation District Review Committee’s jurisdiction area (it has never been in an HCDRC area, not even before the storm).

You know what scares me about Ray Nagin with regard to historic preservation, while I was at a Lakeview neighborhood meeting several months ago, Nagin was so excited about the demolitions because there would be new houses. While I agree there needs to be demolitions in Lakeview it is my hope the neighborhood will not bulldoze itself to where it is a soulless, ugly – “mcmansioned” area of New Orleans. Any mayor who was the least bit of a preservationist would have been more indifferent to the demolition issue, but Nagin was soooooo happy that there would be new houses.

    Thank you for bringing this situation to wider attention. South Lakeview (south of the railroad overpass) is somewhat protected by the NCD because of the South Lakeview National Register Historic District. Unfortunately, hundreds of older homes of equal historic value will be lost simply because they are on the “wrong side of the tracks.” The City has NO organized effort to protect its architectural history and heritage, despite the fact that cultural tourism is this City’s life blood. What idiocy!
