The impending move to a new campus was a topic of discussion as directors of the Fannie C. Williams Charter School gathered for their monthly board meeting, Sept.18.

Principal Kelly Batiste encouraged the board to hire professional movers when the school relocates in mid-October.  She said she was concerned about liability if volunteers do the job and noted that the school lacks appropriate equipment, such as dollies.

The board approved spending up to $9,248 for the move, the price quoted to Batiste by one company she contacted, US Restoration, LLC. Board members agreed to obtain more quotes before choosing a mover.

In other business, Batiste said the school currently has 515 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, short of its goal of 550.  The school also has 37 pre-kindergarten students.

Five make-up days for time lost to Hurricane Isaac are tentatively scheduled as follows, Batiste said: Oct. 2, Feb. 14, Feb.15, April 18 and May 23.

The school will be working with SUNS Center to evaluate the needs of special-education students, now that the Recovery School District has raised the price it charges for the service, Batiste told the board.

A new business manager, Brenda Watson, will begin work Oct. 1, and four new members joined the board this month: Brenda Flint-Minor, Emily Roubion, Charles Kaiser and Eddie Davis.

Members Flint-Minor, Roubion, Debra Dean, Candice Forest, Donnyette Love and Al Edwards were present.

The meeting began at 6:07 p.m. and adjourned at 7:09 p.m.  The next meeting will be Oct. 16 at 6 p.m.
