Behind The Lens episode 238: ‘Juvenile Jails’

Nick Chrastil and Katy Reckdahl on a bill that would provide funding to build new local juvenile-detention faciilites. Marta Jewson and La'Shance Perry on the Living School's final days as it prepares to close its doors.

This week on Behind The Lens, a proposed bill in the state legislature would provide funding to parish governments to build new local juvenile-detention facilities resulting in a system that mirrors Louisiana’s adult system, which uses local lockups to house state prisoners.

And the class of 2024 at Living School should be celebrating as they approach graduation day, instead, they are preparing to say goodbye to the unconventional school as it closes its doors for good at the end of the year, prompting conversations about how a start-up school’s success should be measured, monitored, and supported by NOLA Public Schools.

Our guests this week are Lens reporters Nick Chrastil, Marta Jewson, La’Shance Perry, and co-editor Katy Reckdahl.
