Einstein Charter School’s board of directors met briefly Saturday to approve a resolution to expand to two schools.
A letter and the resolution has been sent to the Orleans Parish School Board and requests to amend the school’s charter to serve up to 500 students in kindergarten through eighth-grade at 5316 Michoud Blvd. — an address that belongs to Intercultural Charter School.
Intercultural’s charter was not renewed by the Recovery School District and will expire on June 30, 2013.
Though Einstein’s board has not officially announced it will take over Intercultural, at past meetings both Einstein board members and school officials have said ‘Intercultural’ while reading documents aloud in place of the written ‘school’ or ‘site’.
A lengthy process of back-and-forth conversations, letters, and resolutions between Orleans Parish School Board and the Recovery School District seem to preclude an official announcement, as Einstein leaders say it is still awaiting word from Orleans Parish on its ability to charter two schools.
Now, Einstein is asking Orleans Parish School Board to approve adding the second school site to its operating agreement and add an authorized maximum enrollment for this second site.
“This letter will go to OPSB with the amendment today,” board president Ryan Bennett said Saturday.
Bennett said the letter would be considered and voted on by Orleans Parish School Board, which meets today for the inauguration of new board members. Einstein’s matter is included on the agenda.
In October, Einstein school officials were encouraged to apply for an i3 grant, federal funding that would help the school expand to a charter management organization and take over a failing school. The application lists Intercultural as the takeover school. In December, Einstein was awarded the grant, allowing the board to continue pursuing a second school site.
Also on Saturday, the board also approved a backlog of minutes from five board meetings. In the fall, auditors found meetings minutes were not readily available at the school.
Members Bennett, Laurin Jacobsen, Lauren Pigeon, Chuck Gasho and Emily Danielson were present, along with Principal Shawn Toranto. The meeting, slated for 10:30 a.m., began at 10:50 a.m. and adjourned at 10:59 a.m.
The board meets again on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the school. View the agenda here.
