The NOLA Public Schools district is tracking three “active” cases of COVID-19 in its schools, one of which was newly reported in the last week, according to its final weekly report of the 2020-21 school year. Numbers have remained low in recent weeks as summer school winds down.

All three cases are in students, and two campuses are affected. The cases have also led 17 people to quarantine. This case update will be the last one issued this school year, district officials said. They will resume reporting when schools reopen in August.

The district’s vaccination pilot program is also wrapping up this week, NOLA Public Schools district spokeswoman Taslin Alfonzo told The Lens. The district partnered with CORE to help provide vaccines to interested teachers and students.

“Schools are working with students and staff to strongly encourage vaccinations for all,” Alfonzo wrote in an email. “Mobile vaccinations will continue to be available in school buildings throughout the school year.”

Nearly 51 percent of city residents have received one dose of the vaccine and just under 47 percent of residents are completely vaccinated. District officials are hopeful increased vaccinations will lead to fewer interruptions of classes and other activities next school year. 

“We know that popular school activities, such as team sports, band, dance, and other extracurricular activities, won’t have to be disrupted by quarantines if all participants are vaccinated,” Alfonzo wrote. “We strongly encourage vaccinations for our students, so they do not miss out on the benefits of in person school and socializing with their peers during other school related activities.”

Testing will continue on campuses next school year. 

“Our COVID-19 testing program remains in place for partner schools through the summer and will be available for all interested schools again during the 2021-22 school year,” Alfonzo wrote.

She also said the district will release updated COVID-19 guidance for next school year in July.
