Live blog recap: Mayor Mitch Landrieu speaks about Steve Scalise shooting

He called the shooting an attack on our democracy.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu cancelled his scheduled State of the City address Wednesday and delivered brief remarks in the wake of a shooting that injured New Orleans-area U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise and others near Washington D.C.

Landrieu called for unity and condemned the attack.

“This senseless violence in America cannot go unchecked,” Landrieu said.

He said he had spoken with U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond, who was on a baseball field nearby when the shooting occurred.

Events like the baseball game they were preparing for are important for lawmakers, Landrieu said.

“We go to battle politically, but personally we’re very respectful of each other and that’s why an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us,” he said. “More importantly, it’s an attack on the country and we all have to stand united against it.”

Map of Scalise’s district

His district covers the southeastern corner of Louisiana except for most of New Orleans. Just a portion of Uptown is included.
