Algiers Charter Schools Association interim CEO Adrian Morgan presented a plan for improved communication, collaboration, and coordination at the association’s board meeting Thursday night at Algiers Technology Academy.
Morgan, who has been on the job for only 14 days, pointed to meetings with community groups, parents, and staff as a key to overcoming the strained relationships the charter organization has faced in recent months.
“The biggest challenges we’ve faced in the ACSA have been the three C’s: communication, collaboration, and coordination. That’s going to be our focus this year. I’m really excited to get out and make those relationships stronger,” Morgan said.
Morgan plans to hold quarterly meetings with parents and teachers as well as ongoing meetings with local churches and community groups. He also said he plans to spend every other day closely monitoring progress at ACSA’s struggling schools, McDonough 32 and William J. Fischer.
Morgan also introduced new staff he hopes will improve ACSA schools. Faydra Alexander, a former teacher with the charter organization, will take over as the chief academic officer, while Andre Duvoisin takes over as principal at McDonogh 32. Dr. Eddy Parsons has accepted the position of chief operating officer.
The changes in ACSA administration come after months of protests over previous personnel changes and protested executive sessions during board meetings.
In other business, the board announced it will approve the school calendar next month, possibly moving spring break to a time after state LEAP tests and extending Mardi Gras break for teacher professional development days.
The board also approved negotiations with Inspire NOLA, the charter organization that will take over Edna Karr and Alice M. Harte under Orleans Parish School Board supervision. ACSA will discuss offering the fledging organization initial operational support including: school lunches, transportation, and financial reporting services.
Following last month’s public hearing on the charter organization’s proposed budget, the board voted to approve an operating budget for the upcoming school year. The board also approved several contracts of $10,000 each, including an arts and music program for O. Perry Walker, Algiers Technology Academy, and Eisenhower Elementary.
The board added a notable item to the agenda and rescheduled board elections to be held at the next meeting.
