The board of E.P. Harney Spirit of Excellence Academy in Central City voted Monday to meet less often.

Instead of meeting the first Monday of every month, the board will now meet every other month.

The change will go into effect following the board’s April 8 meeting.

The board’s committees — including the finance and academic committees — will meet on the months when a board meeting is not held.

Enrollment at E.P. Harney, which serves kids from pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade, rose to 385 students at the state’s Feb. 1 count, Principal Eileen Williams said. The school budgeted for 381 students, which means additional per-pupil funds will make their way to the school later this spring, she said.

E.P. Harney has a performance score that technically qualifies it as failing, but it has a “T” letter grade from the state, which means it is considered a “turnaround” school. Harney made so much progress pulling its scores up last year that it was labeled one of the state’s “Top Gains” schools.

Williams told the board during the meeting that the school did not cancel class during this week’s boil water order. She said that students were encouraged to bring bottled water from home. Teachers used hand sanitizer to avoid washing hands in the bathroom.
