1722 Cleveland Oct 20 Rebel 001

The owner sent a representative by the name of Lisa Clark to request demolition of this 1880’s Eastlake (high style Victorian) shotgun which is in fair shape, squatters are living in it. It’s got great exterior detail, like shutters and the terra cotta crown on the roof. Interiors include fireplaces and mantles intact. The side gallery is great. This property could be renovated.

The owner, Henry Herdman, is well known in the Tulane/Gravier neighborhood because he owns many neglected properties and vacant lots. This house has some solid architectural features that should have been nurtured. I have seen this one man destroy a neighborhood’s architectural fabric just because he has refused to sell and the city lacks the teeth to take his neglected properties away. My post on Metroblogging New Orleans tells the story of my very first site visit for SH. At One With Weird

Here is the list of properties this man owns, according to the assessor’s database. Often these folks have more blighted property, hiding some of them under the names of family members. We need some property law enforcement in New Orleans.

  1. By chance, I have met Henry Herdman, at the City Hall finance room, paying property tax bills no less. We chatted and I let him buy me lunch and tell me his story. He’s an eccentric, very nice, if somewhat paranoid man. After that he’d call and invite me to go with him to see James Rivers at Harrah’s, and now I wish I had, just for the experience. I guess he interited the properties? At the time, pre-K, he wanted help getting his affairs in order but was worried about a girlfriend stealing from him? it was kinda kooky. I don’t think he’s malicious, just kinda lost. I wonder what ever happened to him?

  2. Its amazing how the hospital was going to buy those properties, and destroy those buildings anyways, its just that you didnt know about it. You sound very familiar, as that woman, that was in a restaurant kissing up on Mr. Henry Herdman. What were your intentions, are you not in medical, that had a rental business as well. You are jeolous because you wanted manager those property and couldnt get the girl gone. Cause you know their is no commonlaw in the state of Louisiana. that girls was with Henry 9yrs and also the guy he had cutting the grass for 12yrs.

  3. Henry herdman was not in real estate business, he was in the parking business. He was a gambling addict, that stole from homeless men. He gave homeless men to live in those rat pack homes. He abuse people he knew. Ask the guy that cut the grass, the lawyer on the corner property that dead knew him too. He inherited the properties from his father, father. I want call the name of the lawyer in the 1800, that was honest help alot of jews invest and henry’s father was one of them, the lawyer was the executor of that estate. They should thank that lawyer for the inheritance, that Henry gamble and party away. PLEASE LEAVE PEOPLE BUSINESS ALONE.

  4. The same Lisa Clarke you talking ill about, has contributed to New Orleans, she was one of the persons, that helped to drain the water from New Orleans, La and because of this she held hands with President George W. Bush.

  5. All those homes were damaged due to Katrina. Some of these homes, homeowners never came back to after the hurricane. Drug users and the homeless took over. A year later most of those homes were burned to ground by the homeless squatters. Thats a very, very bad neighborhood. Why you think the Mental Hospital has aqcuired these properties so easily.

  6. Does anyone know how I can contact Lisa Clarke. I met her one year after Katrina and she was trying to locate Henry’s family regarding his properties. Last I heard was that a relative was found and took control of all the properties.

  7. Below is the correct link to the original article I did on this property. It seems to have been moved by the Metblogs folks.

I am so glad to see our archives from SH being published someplace fresh where people can see the historical thread of our long battle for conservation in New Orleans post-Katrina. Thanks Karen and The Lens! I can’t update actual link but it was the first I visited for Karen and one of the best stories I did for Squandered Heritage.

    Keep up the good work.
