717 Deslonde Street
National Register, Holy Cross Historic District
This is a beautiful shotgun house in Holy Cross on Deslonde near Royal, former home to “two little old ladies” who presumably only took it out on Sundays. While I was taking pictures, Willie White with the PRC drove by and told me that the PRC is now renovating it, and that if it’s still on the FEMA 106 list it should be taken off.

PRC purchased 717 Deslonde after seeing it on a voluntary demolition list and will be renovating it. Our request to have it removed from the voluntary demolition list has been sent to and received by the city attorney’s office, which is handling the various demolition lists.
Sarah, If people are interested in any of these FEMA demolitions who should they contact?
Glad to see this house will be saved
The PRC sends postcards to all owners who’s houses appear on the voluntary demolition list. We let them know there are alternatives to demolition and that we can help them. We provide contact info so they can reach us.
When we are lucky, we get responses and then we work individually with the owner. Sometimes all they need is for a team of our volunteer architects to visit and advise them and they then rescind their request.
Sometimes they want to sell (as was the case on deslonde). Sarah has recently compiled a list of houses that owners have asked us to market, and photos of the houses will apear in the PRC’s next Preservation In Print. Next week I am putting them on the PRC web site.
What could be really helpful is a team of volunteers who can help us call the owners. Sometimes we can get phone numbers from “reverse lookup” web sites, using their addresses.
Do you think your Squandered Heritage fans would want to help out a little?
