Board members for New Orleans’ only all-male charter school this week voted to appoint an interim chief executive officer in a meeting that was initially publicized to be held three days later. Andrea Thomas-Reynolds, who has consulted with Miller-McCoy Academy for Mathematics and Business since September, will run the eastern New Orleans campus through the end of the school year.

At its monthly meeting Monday night, the Miller-McCoy board faced staff and administrators frustrated by a recent restructuring of school leadership and academics. With a $500,000 budget gap caused by lower-than-anticipated enrollment, consultant Andrea Thomas-Reynolds has been working with interim principal Brian Joseph and newly appointed achievement director Janice Bailey-Walker to cut unnecessary staff and consolidate class schedules.

In lieu of a quorum at the Oct. 11 Miller-McCoy board of directors meeting Andrea Thomas-Reynolds, former Algiers Charter Schools Association CEO, updated the board on the school’s charter renewal and extension process.

The Miller-McCoy finance committee hosted a public hearing to review their proposed budget for the upcoming school year. The proposed budget shows a net income of $679, just breaking the school out of the red, but leaving little room for error.

The Miller-McCoy board of directors met Monday night at Xavier University to review year-end financials and discuss the approaching first day of school. Miller-McCoy finished the fiscal year with a $183,000 surplus, $140,000 more than the finance committee had expected.

The board of Miller-McCoy Academy met on April 23 to discuss next month’s charter renewal process. The board expects their financial statements, facilities and state test scores to be evaluated before an extension of the charter is approved.

Financial implications of an increase in students with special needs topped the agenda at the monthly meeting of the Miller-McCoy Academy board, April 26. Currently, 13 percent of Miller-McCoy’s enrollment – a total of 67 students – are identified as having special needs, an increase of 22 students that could strain the school’s finances.

Plans for a new building and updates on college placement were highlights of the Miller-McCoy school board’s monthly meeting, Feb. 27.

A recent Recovery School District review of facilities and the acceptance of graduating seniors by four-year colleges were key topics under discussion at the monthly meeting of the Miller-McCoy Academy board, Jan. 23.

The board meeting scheduled for this evening has been cancelled. A new date for the November meeting has yet to be announced at the Miller-McCoy Academy website.
