Grant would aid students with disabilities; One App admissions process spurned

Hynes has teamed up with Lusher and Audubon charter schools to apply for a state grant that would fund academic services for students with disabilities, school officials said at September’s monthly board meeting. If the application is successful, each school would receive $50,000 from  Believe and Include, a $4 million state program to advance academic excellence as Louisiana moves public school curricula into alignment with the Common Core State Standards Initiative sponsored nationwide by the National Governors Association.

Hynes Charter School closes out the school year by approving 2012-2013 budget

The Hynes Charter school board welcomed two new members and approved the 2012-2013 operating budget in its last meeting of the school year, June 11. Helene Derbigny and Cassandra Youmans will replace departing board members, Todd Schexnayder and Elizabeth Sigler.

Hynes budget increase reflects rising cost of employee benefits

The Hynes Charter School’s board announced at its annual budget hearing that rising teacher benefits and facilities costs accounted for spending hikes in next year’s budget, effective July 1. Next year’s budget is slated to be $5.4 million, a 7 percent increase from last year.

The board that runs Edward Hynes Charter announced an 11 percent increase in the first draft of its 2012 – 2013 budget. The  board will hold a public hearing on the budget on Monday, June 11 at 4:30 p.m.

Two playgrounds are on the way; new board members seated; utility bills coming down

KaBoom will begin construction of two playgrounds at Edward Hynes next fall, its board announced at its April / May meeting. Principal Michelle Williams said KaBoom, a national non-profit dedicated to creating community play spaces, will build a smaller playground in a dedicated space for the school’s pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students and a larger one for older students.

Administrators at Hynes Charter School are working through the Orleans Parish School Board and Entergy to reduce soaring utility bills. The Entergy bill for each of the past two months topped  $25,000 – $12,000 more than the school had budgeted monthly.

Academic performance soars; school budget on track despite move; LPO/band concert slated

The school’s latest academic performance data show major improvements, highlighted by a school-wide reading mastery rate of 81 percent or above. Kindergarten has made  extraordinary progress, with students ranked as “emerging readers” jumping from 58 to 82 percent.

Edward Hynes Charter School will vacate its current premises and move into a new building before year’s end, the school’s board of directors said during its September monthly meeting. According to last week’s report from the project manager of the new building at 990 Harrison Ave., the school is on track to move into the building the week of Dec.19.
