Sheriff's deputy indicted after inmate says officer forced him to perform oral sex in jail

A former Orleans Parish Sheriff’s deputy accused in September of forcing an inmate to perform oral sex after handcuffing him and taking him to a jail closet has been indicted on charges of second-degree kidnapping, sexual battery and malfeasance in office. Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman fired former Sheriff’s Deputy Dejuan Thomas following the alleged incident.

Sheriff: Jail will have more inmates in 2012

Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman expects to increase the number of inmates in his jail from 3,100 to 3,400 next year, he said during a public hearing Friday. Gusman confirmed the expected increase even as an advisory group assembled by Mayor Mitch Landrieu is working to set the final size of Gusman’s new jail, and relations between the two offices have become more strained as the group delays a final decision on the jail’s capacity.

Councilwoman blasts Landrieu for not changing the way sheriff gets paid

Councilwoman Susan Guidry criticized Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s administration Tuesday for failing to change the way it pays for inmates housed at the city’s jail. Guidry’s displeasure came out as the council continued its review of Landrieu’s proposed 2012 budget.

Sheriff's deputy arrested while on duty at jail after ex-girlfriend complains of beating

An Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy was arrested while working at the jail last month after allegedly punching his ex-girlfriend in the face for refusing to discuss rumors that he had been having sex with male inmates at the jail, police records show. Thomas, 24, was allowed to change out of his deputy’s uniform before being booked back into the jail as an inmate on charges of simple battery on March 23.
